Load Up the Washing Machine, Home Made Laundry Detergent Recipe

Sorry for taking the last few days off.  I have been dealing with two sick babies.  They both caught the stomach flu, yikes!  Needless to say I have had my hands full.  Who knew something so little could make such a big mess.  Times two!  Yikes!  My house is a mess and it reeks of the stench of bile.  Gross right?

I figured since today is Tuesday and Tuesday is Thrifty Tips to Try Out.  I should share my home made laundry detergent recipe.  I have A LOT of laundry to do, theirs and mine.  I may or may not have been a victim of a two years old bellyache.  There are definite advantages to making your own detergent, cost, time, environment factors, cost again.  To make four gallons of detergent costs me less than $20.  It will also last me a year or close to it.  I buy my ingredients in bulk from Costco, so I am able to stretch my $ mile high.

I make my batch of detergent in a five gallon bucket, you know the Homer one from Home Depot.  I dump a whole bag of Borax and Arm & Hammer Washing Soda.  I take four bars of peppermint castille soap by Dr. Bronners, chop them up in a food processor.  Think little as possible pellets.  Very small size chunks.  Toss that all into the five gallon bucket with the other two ingredients and put the lid on and shake.  Shake, shake, shake your booty.  Keep shaking.  It needs to be mixed really well.  Please make sure that the lid is on tight, you do not want to be inhaling baking soda.  It is not pleasant, trust me!

Once you feel that your arms are going to fall off from shaking the detergent.  You should probably stop shaking.  Transfer some of the batch to a one gallon bucket or some cutesy jug and presto you are ready to do some laundry.  And if the off chance you don’t have any laundry to wash, come on over.  I have tons!  : )

This is the piece de resistance of knowledge that you should know about your new detergent.  You only need a tablespoon per load.  That’s right, one tablespoon (tbsp) per load.  That is why it will last you so long!  Many of the pre made detergents that you buy from the stores are loaded with salt in their ingredients.  What does salt clean?

To wrap it, because I have acquired a lot of dirty laundry these last few days.

Get an equal size bag of Borax and Arm & Hammer Washing Soda.  Dump them into a bucket slowly, trust me on this one.  And you can use which ever body soap works best for your skin type.  I prefer the smell of Dr. Bronners Peppermint Castille Soap.  Shake the mix up really well.  When it is time to wash some clothes, add the soap to the washing machine first and turn it on and fills with water, then add your clothes.  This will help to make sure you don’t get a powder reside on your clothes.  (It has been known to happen, lol.)

There are many benefits for your skin to using this recipe as well as your wallet.  My husbands white socks were stained from his shoes, after the third wash they are completely white again.  They almost look like new socks.  Bonus!  And arm pit stains are washed away, no more yellow pits.  Gross!  As for your skin, you aren’t exposing your body to chemicals that you cannot pronounce.  Purer and fewer ingredients are better for you!

FYI:  You can also use this detergent to clean your carpets!  Those pesky spots come right out and it is pet and child friendly.  I am not saying that they can eat it, but there are far less chemicals than the carpet spot cleaner you buy at a store.

If you have any questions regarding my recipe, feel free to contact me.  I may or may not be a little delirious from the last two tiring long stinky days.  Lol.

Reward Poster

1234I am a very organized person, ask anybody that knows me.  They have stories on how organized I am.  But for the life of me, I couldn’t find my favorite pair of Gap pants.  I searched everywhere to no avail.  I couldn’t find them anywhere.  I asked my husband if he had seen them.  His reply was no.  So I looked and looked, at one point he even helped me look for them.  The search went on for weeks, then months.  I couldn’t figure out where they went to.  They were just lost.  I searched my closet and came up empty handed again in my quest.  I joked with my husband that I was going to make a reward poster for my pants.  He did his normal shake of his head, when I start acting crazy.  (That is how he deals with me, lol.)  I swear I looked everywhere for these pants, they are my favorite pair.  Not a closet was left unsearched nor a drawer.  Finally after almost four months of searching for my pants, they showed up in my closet.  They were dead center in the closet!  I had looked there, several times, I promise I did!

Who is missing with me?  You win! But, thanks for bringing my pants back, lol!

Has this ever happened to you?
