Couponing, the Beginning to Great Savings!

Couponing, The Beginning To Saving Money

Learning to coupon to save money on your grocery bill can be scary and nerve wrecking to try and figure out where and how to start.  I will try and make it as painless as possible for ya.  To get started, I recommend creating a list of items that you normally buy, you can do this mentally or getting all fancy and creating a spreadsheet.  Once you do that you know which coupons to look for.  You are creating a cheat sheet for your couponing.

The next thing that you should learn about couponing is what your sale flyers and ads are.  My grocery sales ad are Wednesday – Thursday, other places are in the region are Sunday – Saturday.  You can either get a copy of the sales ad for your grocery stores by subscribing to the newspaper, which is ideal if you want to clip coupons.  Or you can subscribe to their email subscriptions.  I do both!  (You never know when something is going to happen to your newspaper).

Once you see what the sale ad for the week entails, circle the items that you intend to purchase.  See if anything is on sale for a really great price that is stock up worthy price.  Sometimes, it just makes sense to buy a large number of an item that you buy on a regular basis when it is on sale, especially if you have coupons to match up with the sale prices.

If the store that you shop has a loyalty card, sign up for it!  Usually, grocery stores will offer great e-coupons that can be loaded onto your loyalty card that have great savings.  A lot of times, people accept the loyalty cards but never register it, register it immediately.  Certain stores track your buying habits and will mail you coupons that you can use based on your previous purchases.  And make sure that you carry the card every time you shop at that store, sometimes, sales prices are only good for card holders.

People always ask me where do I find coupons?  I myself, usually buy five newspapers a week.  I don’t have a large space to have a stock pile, so I normally don’t buy more than 5 or 10 items, unless it is a really great price or free!  Yes, I have a binder stuffed of coupons.  A great source for coupons is magazines, some have great coupons in them.  But there are so many more sources to score coupons if you don’t want to clip coupons. Once you start looking for coupons, they will fall at your feet…trust me!

There are a ton of coupons on the Internet just waiting for you to print your way to savings.  One of the best sites for coupons is, they have a wide selection of coupons on their database.  I also use, or; for my organic and gluten free items on our grocery list.  Also, a great source for coupons is Facebook, many companies are using social media to attract and reward their customers for buying their products.  You never know when a company that you like is going to give a coupon for being a fan of theirs.

Another place to find coupons is on a companies web page, for example Procter & Gamble offer tons of great ways to save money on their products.   Plus, as another bonus for signing up for these savings, often times, the companies send out samples to their loyal customers.  You can get some really great samples and/or coupons for free product or high value savings.

There are a few guidelines for using printable coupons you should know about.  The most important to learn is it not okay to photocopy a printable coupon.  That is a federal offense, a huge no-no!  Secondly, you can print two coupons per computer or device.  In order to print another coupon, you just need to hit the refresh button in your browser tab.  If you have more than two computers, you can print four of the same coupon.

Yes, I know it is a lot of work to get started, beginning couponing is like a game of hide and seek.  But once, you figure out where to find the coupons, there will no stopping your savings.  Again it is important to be patient and learn how to hold on to coupons to wait for a good sale.  That is how so many couponers are able to score so many free things.

In order to be a great couponer, you must be open and willing to try new items.  I know that I myself, I tend to buy the same things for my household over and over again.  The good thing about couponing is that you get to try out new products.  It is the best way to get the great deals, many of which can be free or close to free.  Free is always best in my opinion, because, if worst case scenario, if you don’t like the product; it didn’t cost your a dime to try it.  Lol.

The important thing about couponing is, it is all about savings.  You will save money, you will makes mistakes when first starting out, (whom am I kidding, I still make mistakes, lol). You will need to be organized or somewhat organized to be successful at couponing.  You will have fun, and get free stuff, stuff that you will actually use.  (If you get free stuff you won’t use, please consider donating it).  Most importantly you will “Stretch Your $ Mile High!” and that is what it is all about!

If you have any further questions on how to get started, please ask!  I would love to help you learn the beginning of couponing.  Here is the link to a coupon lingo cheat sheet.
